The University Club of Denver was established in 1891 by Henry Rogers and a group of university alumni with a mission “to promote social intercourse among ourselves and the encouragement of literature.” The founders believed that the value of a university education extended well beyond graduation, fostering a lifelong pursuit of intellectual and social engagement. In 1895, the Club opened its permanent home at 1673 Sherman Street, just steps from the Colorado State Capitol.

One of the most significant moments in the Club’s architectural history came in 1923 with the addition of the College Room—designed by a young Temple Buell in what would become his first professional commission. Buell, who would later rise to national prominence for his contributions to modern American architecture and the development of the shopping mall, left a lasting mark on the Club with the room’s refined classical detailing and dignified proportions. His work on the College Room helped launch a prolific career that would include civic buildings, hospitals, and commercial centers throughout Colorado and beyond.

To accommodate its growing membership and expanding programming, the University Club underwent further additions in 1957 and again in 1980. Today, the Club remains a vital institution in Denver’s civic and social landscape, rooted in tradition while continuing to foster intellectual exchange, camaraderie, and cultural enrichment.
