SKETCHING: BYRON WHITE UNITED STATES COURTHOUSE
1823 Stout St, Denver CO 80257
Choose your favorite medium for marble and join us in sketching the Byron White United States Courthouse. Clad in Colorado Yule marble, this grand Neoclassical building is distinguished by sixteen three-story Ionic columns at its main entrance, each adorned with sculpted eagles.
Completed between 1916 and 1920, the courthouse exemplifies the federal architectural style that dominated public buildings at the turn of the century. Originally, the basement and first floor housed the postal service, the second floor served the federal judiciary, and the third and fourth floors provided offices for federal agencies serving the Rocky Mountain Region.
Above the main entrance, the frieze bears the names of cities—those east of Denver inscribed to the east of the central bay, and those west of Denver to the west—symbolizing the flow of mail across the nation. Source: U.S. General Services Administration
